True story — really happened and real conversation
So I’m eating lunch, talking to a friend and we’re talking about journals.
Friend: You read “Alice” don’t you?
Me: Oh my gosh, of course I read Alice. She’s hysterical.
Friend: Oh, me too — I love her stories about the kids.
Me: And Lorenzo.
Friend: Lorenzo? I just started reading her. I haven’t read about
Lorenzo.
Me: Well, you’ve gotta go back in the Archives then. She’s got some
priceless stuff in there.
Friend: I hardly ever go back to anybody’s Archives. I get confused.
Me: It won’t matter with Alice. Each entry is a whole little story.
Friend: I think I like Alice because she can be so funny — but she can be
serious too.
Me: In the Archives there’s a whole lot of writing about her students from
a year or two ago. You can tell she really loves those kids. I can still
remember things she wrote about them from ages and ages ago. Glitter
Girl — I always wonder what happened to Glitter Girl.
Friend: Yeah, that’s good writing. When it stays with you for a long, long
time.
Me: Yep, that’s Alice. I don’t miss an entry.
Alvin of “Waterlilly Alley” says

NyteWind formerly of “Weaving the Shadows” says
Alice has a sharp wit and wild sense of humor. Assume Nothing is well
written, giving the reader a good view of the everyday up and downs of life
of a single Mom.
Erica formerly of “‘I am a mother” says
Alice is tears and laughter, chuckles too. She is a mover and a
shaker, a planner, a person that follows through. A thought provoker.
A mother. A workerbee, a humorist, a writer. Alice is just about
everyday.
Jan Bednarczuk of “My Life in 12-Point Font” says
Alice is a mother, a teacher, and even though I’ve
never met her, she feels like one of my best friends.
She’s witty, wise, and sometimes weary, but she always
has something interesting to say. She reminds me of my
mom, and the mom I someday hope to be.
Lucy formerly of “Zebra Stripe” says
“Alice is in a class by herself *wink*. Of all the journalers I’ve had the
pleasure to *meet* in cyberspace, she’s the only one I took an immediate
liking to. I’m sure I’m in good company when I say, she’s warm, friendly and
funny and there’s not an uppity bone in her body. I was delighted when I
discovered her journal and I hope she never quits writing. It would be a
cryin’ shame if she did.”
Caoimhe formerly of “Just Stopping By” says
Alice writes a journal like few others. On the
surface she could be easily described – Mother,
teacher, woman, single. But there’s so much more
there.
She writes with clarity and purpose that few others
seem to match. Each entry is a window into her day,
her life or her mind.
She is serious, witty, funny, and fey by turn.
Alice’s own words will describe her so much better
then I ever could … just go read.
Matt formerly of “Purple Passages” says
I vividly remember my first sight of Alice. She met
me at the airport wearing a white blouse, sandals
and skintight jeans; well tanned, with bright red hair
and dark Indian eyes, she greeted me with her big smile
and thick Texan drawl. Later I watched her, amazed, as
she joked with every stranger. A hard woman to ignore.
I talked to her a lot that weekend. She could be
bossy sometimes, sarcastic even more, very strong
willed and quick to snap at you if you stepped out
of line. She was very proud of herself, almost to
the point of vanity, but also charming, intelligent,
interesting, funny and a hell of a lot of fun. Unmistakably
charismatic and one of the sexiest women I’ve ever met.
I was sorry to leave her and the sunny skies of Austin
for the gray steel and concrete of Queens, but in a sense
I never did. Once you meet Alice and her knockout
personality you never quite forget her.
Jim Valvis formerly of “Nothing by God”
and now a published author says…
Alice is: mother, teacher, poet, writer, friend. Strong as an ox,
pretty as a song bird, goofy as a llama. A truer than true
woman with all the parts in the right place– especially her
heart
Pamie of “squishy” says
Alice is a woman with an extreme amount of patience.
She’s a teacher, a parent, and once you open her pages
– an instant friend.
She updates often enough to satisfy even the
most addicted enthusiast,and she rarely
fails to entertain.
Moira formally of “Fluidity” says
Reading Alice is like sitting down with your best
friend (it isn’t the ‘we haven’t spoken for months but
we’re back in tune instantly’ sort of friendship- it’s
the ‘talking twice a day and there’s still more to
say’ sort of friendship) and a bottle of wine and
talking. It’s the sort of conversation where you find
yourself going from the lunatics who live next door to
your most serious concerns and back again- without
really noticing. Instead, you notice how easy it is
between you and how much lighter you feel afterwards.
Al of “Nova Notes” says
Always human, with the full range of humanness (mother in quandary,
employee with issues, teacher who doesn’t assume saintliness, sexually
aware and often taking up with the wrong man–and with the guts to admit
it, a true friend and a thoughtful writer), courageous enough to tell it
like it is rather than the way it should be, always quick with advice when
needed, and a good person–as well as a good read.
And…last but not least….
One of my very favorite journallers.
Jan formerly of “Silent Things” says
Potential Alice Reader: Don’t waste your time reading our pitiful words
regarding how amazing and wonderful Alice is, for our words won’t due her
justice, just plunge right in and discover for yourself – and I guarantee
you will be immediately ensnared in Alice’s delightful web of lunacy. No, I
am NOT implying Alice is loony (not that I’m exactly denying it…). Alice
has the wondrous ability to see the ridiculous irony of life and tells her
tales with a delicious dose of laughter….but more than that, she has the
ability to make you cry even while you laugh, for she’s sweet and sensitive
and unafraid to bare her soul and her heart. She’s someone you wish was
your best friend, someone you can identify with, someone to laugh with,
someone to cry with….someone you feel damn lucky for knowing, someone you
care for deeply. So potential reader, times a’wasting, go find out who
Alice is for yourself….you’ll thank me for it, I promise you
And now read Alice the Mad Redhead and Assume Nothing
